Turkish cement industry continues to grow even though to the global economic crises.

The clinker capacity exceeded 64 million ton and cement capacity exceeded 105 million ton in Turkey with 48 integrated plants and 20 grinding stations as of 2010.

If we consider the figures of 2009, Turkey is the biggest cement producer in Europe and the 5th in the world.

Safety
Somer International, an agent in Turkey has been representing many European Machinery and Equipment manufacturers focusing on the cement market; namely Pillard Feuerungen GmbH, Fives Pillard, Vecoplan, Brokk AB, Bricking Solutions, Di Matteo, Standard Industrie and HGH for decades. The most common point for all of them except focusing on cement industry is their perfect reputation in terms of quality product and problem solving business approach. They have started to cooperate with an American company, Bricking Solutions (a division of Brokk AB / Sweden). Their products include Brick Lining Machine, Safety Cages/Tunnels, Ramps etc. are made of high quality aluminum (6061 T6) and modern designs meets international standards for engineering fabrication and safety standards giving them a relatively high price upfront compared to steel products.

In the Turkish Cement Industry, it is not very easy to change their habits of using steel made (which is also an indication for strength) products with higher priced alternatives; but “thanks to Bricking Solutions patience and their professional business approach. They give very fruitful trainings in their factory for their agents” says Ahmet Somer the General Manager of Somer International who has successfully completed three full days training together with Ercument Ulguner the Product manager of Somer International. He mentions that increasing safety issues and the ease of use for this kind of products will increase the attention of the Turkish Cement Industry for safety cages, safer and faster brick lining machines and Brokk remote control demolition machines. He also adds that the safety issues will be determining the type of product and process used in the cement industry more and more in the future. Some deadly accidents recently experienced will definitely speed up this change in the industry.

Alternative fuels
Another trend in the Turkish Cement Industry is to use Alternative Fuels. First one in AKCANSA/Buyukcekmece Plant (Heidelberg joint venture with Sabanci Group) was realized by Vecoplan. Vecoplan supplied the preparation (primary shredder, density separator, secondary shredder), conveying and the storage of RDF (Refused Derived Fuel). The plant is planning to increase the amount of alternative solid waste used.

Another group Cementir/Cimentas also made some investments in the Aegean region of Turkey for RDF preparation. Vecoplan also installed a TULS (Truck Unloading Station) for prepared RDF and a storage system to the CIMENTAS/Izmir Plant.

Finally a complete system to BURSA Cement; Primary Shredder 25 t/h, Magnetic Separator, Density Separator, Secondary Shredder 10 t/h, Storage and Vecobelt 160 mt (conveyor specifically designed for RDF transportation) and Automatic  Sampling Station was installed by Vecoplan and running successfully by BURSA Cement experts.
Besides the RDF usage in some plants, the dried sludge was successfully used as an alternative fuel in NUH Cement. 70-80% wet sludge is dried down to less 10% and transported by a silobus to the system installed by Di Matteo. Dried sludge in the silobus is compressed to the silos and after the weighing system, pneumatically conveyed through the pipes and burned by a Pillard burner in the calciner. The system capacity is 5 t/h.

OYAK Aslan Cement (previous Lafarge Aslan Cement) is another plant recently completed their investment for RDF and burning significant amount of RDF with their new generation Pillard burner, NOVAFLAM.

In the capital city of Turkey, Ankara BASTAS (Vicat Group) is another plant using RDF for many years.

Brick Management with a Port-A-Trac

This innovative brick transfer system is a supportive component adding efficiency, less worker fatigue, and improved brick management to the modern pneumatic bricking machine.  This smaller supportive component was designed a decade ago with the sole purpose of feeding brick to bedding and mason crews while utilizing only a maximum of two workers so brick management didn’t interfere with brick installation.

In 30 minutes a Port-A-Trac can be installed in a kiln reaching under the bricking machine to the bedding crew.  With a dedicated fork lift operator and one laborer a 4,000 lbs pallet of brick can be pulled up kiln by an electric power winch to the bedding crew to keep production moving swiftly.  Utilizing this procedure optimizes your manpower by allowing 5 of the 7 crew originally passing brick one by one to move onto more important jobs within the kiln. So many times have I heard project managers scrambling to put guys on different jobs to meet schedule deadlines, which usually meant the first highly trained crew members, would be pulled onto another job.   While less trained crew members were left operating the bricking machine causing inconsistency in the installation job. And if you are already short handed thanks to layoffs necessary in our current economy, this only leads to longer work days, overtime, and worker fatigue.

The most beneficial aspect of utilizing a Port-a-Trac is the reduction of brick handling, which adds up to less brick damage increasing brick life.  Moving brick one by one on to a roller conveyor and than staging the brick for bedding and bricking crews doubles brick handling, which decreases brick life enormously.  Not to mention the wear and tear on the backs, necks, and shoulders of those handling the brick.  Then you’ve added worker fatigue and injury to your list of delays.  Optimization just flew out the window.

  • With a Port-A-Trac, 2 men can easily push a 4,000 LB pallet of brick up the kiln and under a Bricking Machine
  • Increase speed of refractory installation
  • Decrease worker fatigue
  • Accommodates multiple transfer carts along the same track, each capable of holding 4,000 LBS
  • Optional power winch available
  • Brake system to hold carts anywhere on track
  • Build to any length - modular aluminum track comes in 3 meter and 1.5 meter sections

Re-joining with Tianjin Pfister

Bricking Solutions and Tianjin Pfister have re-joined forces. Tianjin Pfister has been appointed exclusive distributor for Bricking Solutions for China. Tianjin Pfister’s 21 strong sales force will be trained at Tianjin Pfister's newest manufacturing plant in Tianjin. In addition to audio visual equipment, meeting rooms and Bricking Solutions literature translated into Mandarin, Tianjin Pfister has set aside and exclusive training area inside of their plant for the training of not only their own sales people but also cement industry customers. The training facility includes almost all of the circle of refractory maintenance and it sports a full size 4.8m kiln shell complete with refractory installed and an EZFlex EOR set up and ready to go. All equipment will be powered and functional.

China is a difficult yet interesting market. We are still learning what it takes to get a decent market share. The market itself is evolving and maturing. The more mature it gets relative to modern methods and increased attention to safety the better it is for our products. Even in a mature market we face cultural, language and multiple local and traditional competition issues. The local competition is fiercer than in any other market we work in. We are hoping by working with a Chinese manufacturer and marketer already well established in the industry that we will finally make our mark.
